  • Novice Teen Driver Training Study

    Date:  September 28, 2018
Where: The National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa

This project is being conducted at The National Advanced Driving Simulator on the Oakdale Campus at the University of Iowa, in collaboration with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. We are interested in whether specialized training programs can help teens become safer drivers. To be eligible for the study, your child must have a valid learner’s permit and be planning to obtain in the next few months either 1) a minor school license at the age of 15.0 or older, or 2) an intermediate driver’s license before the age of 17.

The study will consist of three visits to the National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University Research Park. The first visit will take between 1 and 4 hours and will take place within 2 weeks of licensure. The second visit will occur about 6 weeks after your first and will take between 1 and 2 hours. The third visit will occur about 4 months after your second visit and will take between 1 and 2 hours. The entire study period will be approximately 5.5 months.

During the three study visits, your child will drive the NADS-2 simulator while wearing a light-weight head-mounted eye tracker. The NADS-2 contains a full size vehicle cab with actual vehicle controls. The driving environment is projected on screens in front of and behind the vehicle. Some participants will be randomly assigned to complete a training program on a computer during the first visit. During the second visit, participants will complete online questionnaires about their personalities. During the six-week period between visits, your child will be asked to track the number of miles he or she drives each week.
