Information Regarding Iowa's New 8th Grade Participation Legislation (HF2591)

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to share an update regarding Iowa's recently enacted HF2591, legislation that allows eligible 8th grade students to participate in high school athletics.

Since the bill became law, we've received questions from families, coaches, and students about what this means at Clear Creek Amana. While the legislation creates new opportunities, it also requires each school district to thoughtfully determine how those opportunities will be implemented.

At Clear Creek Amana, our priority will always be making decisions that are in the best interest of our students and our programs.

Over the next several weeks, the CCA board of education in collaboration with district and activities department leadership will continue reviewing the legislation, guidance provided by the IHSAA and IGHSAU, and recommendations from school districts across Iowa. That will help us establish how the district will determine if and when 8th grade students will be allowed to participate in high school activities. We aim to be consistent, transparent, and focused on student success during this process and will continue to provide updates as available.

What should families expect?

HF2591 does not mean every 8th grade student will automatically participate at the high school level.

Instead, requests for high school participation will be considered individually through an established review process. Considerations may include:

• Recommendations from the head varsity coach
• The student's athletic and emotional readiness
• Academic standing and overall well-being
• Safety considerations
• The needs of both the middle school and high school programs
• Other factors that support the long-term development of the student-athlete

Each situation is unique, and decisions will be made accordingly.

As I begin my role as Activities Director at Clear Creek Amana, I appreciate the warm welcome our family has already received from this community.
