At CCA, our priority is to create an environment that fosters focus, learning, and well-being for all students. While we recognize that cell phones are a part of our everyday lives, they are not a necessary requirement to meet curricular outcomes. In fact, cell phones are often a distraction to our students’ ability to engage in their learning. To maintain an optimal learning environment for all students and to ensure safety and limit distractions, we request your support as we curtail the student use of cell phones and other personal devices district-wide. With that in mind, we are introducing a new Personal Electronic Device Policy, which will take effect after winter break on Monday, January 6, 2025. The policy prohibits device use in elementary and middle schools and limits use in high schools to specific times and areas.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
Elementary and Middle School:
If students choose to bring a cell phone/device to school, the device(s) will be powered off and remain in student backpacks/lockers/cubbies during the full school day, including lunch/recess. Cell phone/device(s) will not be allowed on field trips. Smart watches may be worn for telling time only and must be in airplane or similar compatibility mode.
High School:
If students choose to bring a cell phone/device to school, the device(s) will remain in a classroom collection container during class periods. Smart watches may be worn during class for telling time only and must be in airplane or similar compatibility mode. The device will remain in the classroom if the student leaves the classroom briefly (to use restroom, library, etc.). Students will be permitted to use cell phones during lunch, passing periods and as approved by building admin for education purposes. Students with an open block are permitted to use their cell phones during that time within the designated area.
We know that changes like these work best when everyone is informed and engaged. That’s why we’ve created resources to help:
