Peer Student Swimming at CCA

CCA special education students enjoy valuable swimming time with peers, peer helpers, teachers and paraeducators when going to the Amana Elementary pool once a week or as permitted.  It’s physical activity that ALL students can participate in no matter what physical limitations they may have. Whether it’s splashing in the water or independent movement, with the help of lifejackets and swim noodles, they can freely do it by themselves without someone moving them there.

It's a unique opportunity for these students to learn water safety, express greater self-control, be exposed to a lifetime leisure activity of swimming, water exercise, diving, and jumping, all while building relationships with peer student helpers and staff in the water. These relationships and swim skills help build their confidence and independence and it increases muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. They can expand on their communication, behavior and social skills, and adaptive behavior skills such as preparing to get in the water, showering and dressing.

Their morning of swimming provides an overall shared sense of stress release for the students, teachers and paraeducators.

Ms. Rapier a Middle School Special Education teacher and Mrs. Trumpold a Middle School PE Teacher both organize these outings with the middle school students and invite the other buildings to join them as permitted. When the students are in the pool, Mrs. Trumpold is often reminded of a quote, “They may have disabilities, but they are not disabled.”
